Tribute to Antwon by Tyrie Moss

"Antwon...As I knew Him":- Tyrie Moss

They say you never truly know anyone these days. That you only get a glimpse of who they really are, so how do we remember someone as young as Antwon, with so little time with him on this earth? The answer is to pool these glimpses, these shards of his existence...

Which ones do I remember the most?

These 3 shards:

Grammy's house:

Everytime we sat in Grammy's house he would always laugh with that sly grin at our bad jokes and every other question would be how we'd sneak something from the kitchen "When we gonna make a move on the apple cider in the fridge" he'd ask...

I remember one night in particular I sat alone watching the news away from the commotion and he came in sat down and I looked over to his face and there was confusion in his eyes. He asked: "Well why are you watching this?" I gave him the same look and said: "Twon, this is THE news" he gave a nod and left.

That was the way with Antwon, The things beyond his family, his friends, his role models, those he cared about, were meaningless. Details to be forgotten while he focused on the things he saw as important.

School:

In the hallways he'd always throw me a nod. A sign that regardless of status, of situation you were someone to him. I remember one day I was running up the stairs to see a teacher, just as I saw him I nearly fell flat on my face and as I got up he stepped forward without smile, smirk or comment and in true Antwon form waited till he knew I was okay..to ask me if I had a dollar with that devious smirk back in full effect . That was the way he was, asking of little when you could tell that he needed real help with what he was going through.

Before he died:

As I pulled back the curtain to the ICU I saw him laying there, so much the same and yet so different. I was lost for words until I looked at the monitor and saw the spikes steady and strong, then I knew the words to say: "Be strong, for your family, for your friends, for yourself and for us all, be strong brother." and the monitor stayed strong. In true Antwon form he held onto his strength and grew stronger, ready to be discharged shortly before his death.

These shards. They seem so common yet they're the ones that'll I'll remember most when the light hits his photograph every Sunday.

Yet most vivid are the shards held by his brother whom has entrusted me with these shards that he held so dear:

"I remember when we played together.

He loved to watch power rangers when we were younger.

He was a huge fan of Bow Wow & Lil' Romeo.

He dreamed to be just like them.

Famous, Young, & Wealthy.

He liked whatever was in style at the time.

While I tried to stay away from following fashion.

I remember when we took turns using the computer.

When we got beat we usually use to get beating together

Because he was right behind me in doing wrong

He helped me to gain the ability to handle responsibility and opened my eyes on many occasions about life

Despite our constant arguing he was still my brother and I always looked out for him as if I was looking out for myself.

It always got me when people messed with him."

So as you go today remember to pass along the shards of our fallen brother that you hold close so that he may live forever in our hearts.
